Common Plastering Questions

What is plastering and why is it important?

Plastering is pretty much what it sounds like, adding plaster to walls. This is important for surface prep if you’re going to paint the walls or add wallpaper, because it adds durability to the building, helps with insulation and soundproofing, keeps moisture at bay, can improve fire safety, and looks beautiful. In a climate like Ireland, plastering is absolutely essential for most buildings.

What are different types of plastering finishes?

Smooth finishes are most popular, and are exactly what they sound like. Textured finishes are achieved using special tools and/or additives. Venetian plaster is a high-end option that comes out looking like polished marble. Roughcast finish is achieved by adding aggregates to the plaster, and pebble dash finishes go one step further by adding small stones to create a rugged appearance. Spatula stuhhi finish is an especially fancy option that looks like marble and is used by layering lime-based plasters to create a reflective surface.

Do you have to remove existing paint or wallpaper before plastering?

With very rare exceptions, you should remove paint and wallpaper before plastering a surface. Leaving paint or wallpaper can lead to uneven surfaces, bubbling, and peeling. Paint can be a little bit more forgiving than wallpaper, but it’s still smart to prepare the surface by removing paint and wallpaper before plastering.

What is the typical lifespan of plastered walls?

This varies drastically depending on the quality of work and materials, the type of plaster used, other structural factors, and the climate. If you hire a cowboy plasterer who only uses the cheapest materials, it’s not going to last very long. If a wall is prepared correctly and high quality plaster is applied by a skilled plasterer, a wall can last for 5 or more years with little or no maintenance. Once a wall has been plastered, it can be maintained indefinitely so long as it isn’t badly damaged.

How do you get a smooth finish when plastering?

This takes years of training and experience, so it’s not an easy question to answer briefly! High quality plastering finishes require patiently applying multiple layers and allowing each layer adequate time to dry. What matters most is that the plasterer have the necessary skills, patience, and a lot of attention to detail. Taking short cuts or skimping on steps can be a recipe for disaster.

How long does it take to plaster a room?

A typical bedroom can be done in 1 day or less, as long as the room is standard and ready for the plasterer to start work. This figure can increase to 2-3 days if the room has not been prepared, needs major fixes, or has special requirements.
